Success of Ankle Replacement Surgery

There has been a growing interest in total ankle replacement due to concerns about the long-term results of ankle fusion surgery. This interest has led to the development of new ankle implants that better mimic the natural structure and movement of the ankle, including its ligaments and alignment. Although the newer 2nd-generation ankle replacements are showing promising results for patients with severe ankle arthritis, there are still challenges. One issue is that ankle replacements tend to fail more often than other joint replacements. This may be because it is hard for surgeons to perfectly replicate the ankle's complex stability and movement during surgery. To improve the chances of success, it is important to make sure this is the correct surgery for you. If you have not had success with more conservative treatments for ankle arthritis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to see if you would be a good candidate for ankle replacement surgery.

In certain cases, in which the patient suffers from extreme pain or damage in a joint, joint replacement surgery may be deemed useful. If you have constant pain in a foot joint, consult with Robert Stein, DPM from South Shore Foot Care. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Over time, joints wear down; this can be exacerbated by diseases and conditions. Joint replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is when a damaged joint is surgically removed and replaced with a prosthesis. Prostheses, which can be made of ceramic, plastic, or metal, act as joints in lieu of an actual joint. One of the most prevalent causes for joint replacement is arthritis.

Arthritis in the Foot

Arthritis can occur in any joint in the body, including in the feet. Common types of arthritis in the foot are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. The big toe is usually where arthritis occurs in the foot; this is known as hallux rigidus.

Joint Replacement Surgery in the Foot

The most common form of joint replacement in the foot is a first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint placement. MTP joint replacement surgery is designed to treat hallux rigidus. Surgery is not intensive, and recovery occurs within one to two months after the procedure has been done. Overall, joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective way to treat pain in the joint of the foot.

Foot Complications Linked to Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes glucose. While it primarily impacts blood sugar levels, it can also lead to various health complications, including those related to the feet. Diabetes-related foot problems are a serious concern that can result from uncontrolled blood sugar levels over time. One common issue is neuropathy, where prolonged high blood sugar damages nerves, possibly leading to numbness, tingling, or foot pain. This sensory loss can make it difficult to notice injuries or ulcers. Another complication is poor circulation, which can slow down the body's ability to heal. Inadequate blood flow can lead to slow wound healing and increase the risk of infections. Diabetes can also cause changes in foot structure which may lead to issues such as bunions, hammertoes, and Charcot foot, a condition characterized by weakened bones and joints. Preventing diabetes-related foot problems involves maintaining good blood sugar control and regular foot care, in addition to choosing appropriate footwear. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you address and prevent foot complications.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Robert Stein, DPM from South Shore Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

How Foot Protection May Help to Prevents Falls

Our feet play a crucial role in maintaining our balance and preventing accidental falls. When it comes to fall prevention, the importance of foot protection is often overlooked. Wearing proper footwear is an essential element in safeguarding against slips, trips, and stumbles. Shoes with slip-resistant soles can provide traction on various surfaces, reducing the risk of sliding. Well-fitting shoes offer stability and support, minimizing the chances of ankle twists or sprains. Additionally, shoes with adequate cushioning can absorb shock and reduce the impact on joints, preventing balance disruptions. Footwear that fits properly and comfortably can help maintain stability and decrease the likelihood of tripping. Whether it is at home, in the workplace, or outdoors, choosing the right shoes for the occasion can make a significant difference in fall prevention, keeping you on your feet and safe. If you would like additional information about the importance of wearing shoes that fit correctly which may help to prevent falling, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Robert Stein, DPM from South Shore Foot Care. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Risks of Chronic Ankle Instability

Ankle sprains are a common occurrence, especially among active individuals, but for some, they can be a recurrent and frustrating issue. Ankle sprains most frequently occur when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are stretched or torn as the joint moves beyond its normal range of motion. Many such sprains may appear minor, with minimal swelling and mobility problems. However, if recurrent, they can have a cumulative effect and produce lasting consequences, leading to chronic ankle instability. Once you have experienced an ankle sprain, you are more likely to have another. Studies have shown that a history of lateral ankle sprains can disrupt the structural integrity of ligaments in the joint. As a result, up to 70% of patients report feelings of instability and recurrent ankle sprain injuries. Consequences include a reduced quality of life and an increased risk of early-onset osteoarthritis. Also, people with a history of ankle sprains often become progressively sedentary, are more likely to gain weight, and experience more general body pain. Methods to reduce the risk of another sprain include wearing an ankle brace and performing a series of exercises designed to strengthen the ankle joint. For help with recurring ankle sprains or instability, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full assessment and appropriate treatment options.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Robert Stein, DPM from South Shore Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
