Why Does My Heel Hurt?

Heel pain is a very common problem that sends people to see a podiatrist. However, not all heel pain is the same. The pain in your heel can be SHARP, DULL, ACHY, RADIATING like ELECTRIC SHOCK, BUILDING with activity, and even gets better with walking. Heel pain can be in DIFFERENT LOCATIONS at the heel and can occur at DIFFERENT AGES. All of these can have very different diagnoses; and very different treatments.

  • Arthritis: Heel pain can be a symptom of certain arthritic diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Reiter’s Disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, etc. The pain is usually dull/sharp, that gets worse with activity
  • Fracture: a stress fracture of the heel bone, the Calcaneus. The pain in your heel will be sharp, and gets worse with weightbearing. You will also have swelling and bruising.
  • Nerve: an entrapped nerve. This type of heel pain is burning, electric, and can be radiating.
  • Skin: wart, skin cancer. This can be a dull type of pain.
  • Mechanical: Plantar Fasciitis, tight heel cord. This pain is usually worst with the first steps after rest.
  • Growth plate stress: Apophysitis The pain is usually with the activity of a sporting event, with the pain stopping after participation ends.
